Anne Arundel Bird Club

The Anne Arundel Bird Club, organized in 1954, is one of 15 chapters of the Maryland Ornithological Society which is dedicated to the protection and conservation of birdlife and other natural resources. The AABC hosts monthly meetings, numerous field trips, lectures and other activities throughout the year. AABC welcomes birders from Charles, Calvert and St. Mary’s counties to join AABC.

Our chapter has undertaken a number of specific conservation and educational projects. One example is a current fundraising effort to construct a nesting tower for Chimney Swifts in Kinder Farm Park. Please support these projects by using the donation boxes below in the right column.

AABC is accepting applications for its Conservation Small Grant Fund. Applications will be evaluated on their benefit to wild birds and their habitats in Anne Arundel County. Projects outside Anne Arundel County may be considered if there is a significant benefit to priority and at-risk birds in Maryland. Download and complete our Small Grant Application. Our current grant limit is $500, but may be exceeded on an exceptional basis.

Anne Arundel Bird Club is holding hybrid meetings this year.

Anne Arundel Bird Club hosts numerous field trips throughout the county and nearby hotspots, both on weekends and during the week. These trips are planned to visit a wide variety of habitats which affords the opportunity to see many diverse species. Trips are led by expert birders who are familiar with the specific local. We welcome all to join in the fun especially novice and youth birders.

Anne Arundel County provides a rich variety of excellent birding opportunities with habitats ranging from Chesapeake Bay coastlines to ponds, streams and rivers; tidal and freshwater marsh; forest, fields and floodplains. Our many parks host fall and spring migrants such as warblers, thrushes, and flycatchers, and breeding birds in summer including hawks, woodpeckers, orioles and tanagers. Several waterfront parks offer winter views of large numbers of waterfowl visiting our rivers and bay.

Click on the tab “County Locations for Birding” below to see a map of Anne Arundel County with several of our primary birding sites marked. Click on a location and you will be directed to a full page of information with insider tips for visiting, description of terrain, and frequently reported species. You will also find links to additional sites, such as park websites, trail maps (when available) and recent ebird listings.

Birders in Anne Arundel County have opportunities to contribute as citizen scientists with bird counts conducted each year, including the Annual Christmas Bird Count, the Spring Count, the Fort Smallwood Spring Hawk Migration counts. Experienced birders team with novices during bird counts and field trips so birders of any level and any age can have a fun and enriching experience.
